ND President Supports Program that Fights Poverty by Eliminating Poor Children

SOUTH BEND, Indiana, May 13, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Fr. John Jenkins, President of Notre Dame University, sits on the board of directors of Millennium Promise, an organization dedicated to fighting poverty in Africa that promotes contraceptives and abortion, it has been revealed.

The finding comes as the controversy over President Obama's award and speech at the University reaches a fever pitch in the last week before the event. As the president of Notre Dame, Fr. Jenkins has received the majority of the heat for the scandal. However, despite the criticism of over 70 U.S. bishops and over 350,000 petitioners, Jenkins has steadfastly continued to defend the university's honoring of the president. In a letter to graduating students dated this past Monday, Jenkins said that Obama is "a remarkable figure in American history and I look forward to welcoming him to Notre Dame."

Fr. Jenkins' involvement on the board of the Millennium Promise was first reported by the Drew Mariani Show and PewSitter.com. (See the list of board members here: http://www.millenniumpromise.org/site/PageServer?pagename=about_bod) Patrick Reilly, president of the Cardinal Newman Society, a Catholic education watchdog organization, responded to the news of Fr. Jenkins' involvement in Millennium Promise, saying in an interview with LSN, "One has to wonder what Fr. Jenkins' opinion is of the Church's teaching on contraception."

Millennium Promise's mission is to enact the eight so-called Millennium Development Goals by 2015. However, the Millennium Development Goals have been widely promoted by pro-contraception and pro-abortion organizations, such as Millennium Promise, as including the goal of increasing access to contraception and abortion globally.

Millennium Promise raises funds from the private sector for what it calls its "flagship initiative," Millennium Villages, a group that works with small villages in Africa.

A Millennium Villages handbook explains that "family planning and contraception services are critical to allow women to choose family size and birth spacing, to combat sexually transmitted infections, including HIV infection, and contribute to the reduction of maternal morbidity and mortality."

It continues to explain that, "Services include: (1) Counseling; (2) Male and female condoms; (3) Pharmacologic contraceptives including oral, transdermal, intramuscular, and implanted methods; and (4) IUDs."

The handbook continues with an encouragement for "safe" abortion: "In countries where abortion is legal, safe abortion services in controlled settings by skilled practitioners should be established." (http://www.millenniumvillages.org/docs/MVP_Handbook_complete_18jun08.pdf page 92).

Fr. Jenkins has stated in the past that Notre Dame participates in the Millennium Villages Project via the Notre Dame Millennium Development Initiative (NDMDI). The efforts of the NDMDI focus on Uganda "where Notre Dame, through the Congregation of Holy Cross, has strong ties."

Interestingly, Uganda is known for its unprecedented success in reducing its HIV rate over the past several decades, using the so-called ABC approach, which emphasizes abstinence and faithfulness as the surest means of avoiding infection. In the last few years, however, anti-HIV leaders in Uganda have complained about an increasing effort by large Western aid organizations to pressure the country to vastly increase its promotion of condoms.

Patrick Reilly of the Cardinal Newman Society said that in his research into Millennium Promise he was extremely concerned to find that "not only condom distribution, but distribution of the pill, injectible contraception, and even abortion are part of the Millennium project's efforts."

"Any Catholic university that supports a program to reduce poverty by eliminating poor children has a serious problem," he said, adding that no Catholic "should be taking a leadership role in an effort that distributes contraception or promotes abortion."

Meet Jonathan Krohn. This home-schooled 14-year old is an author and an actor. His book, Define Conservatism, is receiving rave reviews, as well as his television appearances and his recent two minutes on stage at CPAC, the Conservative Political Action Conference.

Jonathan Krohn is making political news, and as Conservatives laud him, Liberals are on the attack. Attacking a 14-year old, rudely and crudely, - hey, no problem for a Lib. Jonathan talks and writes about the principles of Conservatism, and it is no surprise that Liberals openly express their disdain of this young man for respecting the Constitution, human life and believing in personal responsibility.

Child stars have been protected and hailed by Liberal Hollywood. So what if a very young Brook Shield was nude in Pretty Baby? So what if Dakota Fanning’s portrayal of a graphically, brutally raped 12 year old victim of child abuse, drowsily dreaming of real snakes slithering all over her? So what if the young boy in Slumdog Millionaire ran naked across the screen, in full view not only of audiences, but of the film crew up-close-and-personal? These are the artistic expressions of talented young actors, but let us make fun of Jonathan Krohn, an intelligent, well-spoken 13-year old who thinks and writes about conservative principles that can apply to anyone, no matter a party preference.

The blog, Wonkette, says in about five years, we can call Jonathan a “twat,” (not a twit, mind you). Another says that “Jonathan Krohn is gonna get his ass kicked when he gets old enough.” Needlenose says that Krohn “is nothing less than Damien, The Son of Satan.” I will not link to them, but a google search will confirm these mean-spirited statements.


Jonathan appeared at the CPAC convention and wowed the audience during his two-minute speech. You can view the video below. His book, Define Conservatism, he explains, focuses on the principles of Conservatism, not Conservatism as policy. After interviews with politicians, and his own research, Jonathan determined that there are four elements to real conservatism. Read them below, and ask yourself why anyone would suggest that the Conservative principles laid out by this young man would call for labeling him a “twat” or a son of satan.

Jonathan Krohn Biography
Jonathan is 14-years old and he is being called a “child political prodigy.” He lives in Duluth, GA with his parents, Doug and Marla Krohn, and his dog Spot. His father is an engineer and his mother is a drama teacher. According to his website, neither parent is particularly interested in politics.

He is home-schooled, and until the release of his book, Define Conservatism for Past, Present and Future Generations, he has been known for his considerable acting skills.

Johnathan has appeared on Broadway as Michael Banks in Mary Poppins. It is reported he had three on-stage call-backs. That’s a very big deal on Broadway. Other credits: John Darling in Peter Pan, and Scott in Dear Edwina, Young Cain in Children of Eden, Colin Cravin in the Secret Garden, as well as parts in The Wizard of Oz, Tom Sawyer, The Jungle Book, and Alice in Wonderland.

Krohn is one-busy 14-year old. He is the principal writer for an internet radio show, “The Life Connection.” He was a guest narrator for Gwinnett Philharmonic’s rendition of Benjamin Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. This young man has played the cello since he 4-years old and has recently begun playing the banjo.

Jonathan says he became interested in politics at age 8 when he heard Bill Bennett on the radio. This was at the time Democrats in Congress were “consistently” filibustering Miguel Estrada’s judicial nomination. Krohn says he was “fascinated by the filibusters” and “why anyone would want to do such a thing.”

His book is not geared toward any age group. At just under 100 pages, it is simple and quick reading. Krohn’s definition of Conservative principles is not solely his definition, but the culmination of the principles he pulled from research and from leading Conservative Georgia politicians. The principles are, in Jonathan’s words:


"respect for the U.S. Constitution, respect for life, less government and personal responsibility"

Shucking it down to the cob, I noticed that almost every conservative without an exception pretty much said that those four basic principles were important and key to being a conservative

"Want to Wreck the Environment? Have a Baby," said Time Magazine Who Now Distributes Their Liberal Bias for Free to Schools Across the U.S.

As if school kids didn’t get enough liberal propaganda. Whether parents know it or not, millions of students across the country have been receiving biased news magazines in the classroom. Without adult guidance, children are at risk to take as fact the consistently liberal views of Time magazine.

Through Great American Opportunities, people can order magazine subscriptions and earn Time for Kids subscriptions for the school of their choice. Kindergarten through sixth-graders will then receive this publication free of charge.

According to its website, “The Time For Kids Program helps schools receive the best in current weekly classroom news magazines for students in grades K-6 at no cost. TFK delivers three weekly news magazines to over 3.9 million students.”

This program comes from a magazine that has published articles on how kids are bad for the environment. As CMI noted previously, Time’s article on May 8 described this environmental problem:

“Want to wreck the environment? Have a baby. Each bundle of joy gobbles up more of the planet’s food, clogs garbage dumps with diapers, churns through plastic toys and winds up a gas-guzzling, resource-consuming grown-up like the rest of us. Still, babies are awfully cute. Given that most people will intend to procreate, what’s an environmentally conscious parent to do?”

Magazine orders may seem to be a simple way to keep children aware of current events. Subscribers and parents need to be aware of the cultural influences this may have on young children who are not aware of the biased articles.

Time for Kids, in its “Lights Out” article on March 20, encouraged participation in an hour of turning of lights and using less energy. They urge children to do their part for the green movement because, “As the planet warms, habitats are put in danger.” The magazine continues to state the disputed global warming theory as a fact.



Given the state of public education, students that saw the Time environmental issue cover on April 21 2008 may not have understood why veterans were outraged by the magazine’s doctoring of the iconic Joe Rosenthal photograph to show the Marines at Iwo Jima raising a tree instead of the original American flag.
And students would have no way of knowing that Time’s managing editor last year dismissed as “fantasy” the notion that journalism should be objective.

That attitude has resulted in Time calling George W, Bush an “eco-villian” at a hundred days into his presidency while hailing Obama at the same mark, suggesting that readers “trash” a book on media bias, and providing Michael Moore with a forum to promote universal healthcare. Do kids benefit from a “news” source that eschews even the semblance of balance and actively promotes liberal ideology in its pages?

"Don't Show Up," says Fr. Frank Pavone to Graduating Seniors of Notre Dame

Seniors who have decided not to take part in their graduation at Notre Dame have invited Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests For Life to lead them in prayer, in an alternate ceremony on another part of the campus, at the very hour that pro-abortion President Obama will speak and be honored by the University.

Fr. Frank Pavone welcomed the invitation saying,
"In standing with these students, I am standing with the true spirit of Notre Dame: a pro-life spirit, in harmony with human reason and Catholic Faith. The scandal that has been generated does not represent what Notre Dame is all about; it represents a radical betrayal of what Notre Dame is all about. I am encouraged by the pro-life activities of so many student groups on this campus – activities that are carried out all year round.

Hundreds of thousands of Catholics, hundreds of priests, and dozens of bishops have called upon Notre Dame to end this scandal by withdrawing its invitation to President Obama. The result of that demand is not in our control. But one final response to this scandal is fully in the control of each graduating senior: don’t show up. Don’t participate in an event which will only serve to obscure rather than highlight the Church's pro-life teaching and the true spirit of Notre Dame. Instead, come to the Class of 2009 Vigil for Life. The seniors who do this are manifesting the real meaning of commencement: they are carrying out the witness to truth and service that their hard-earned degrees have prepared them to give in the world."

Despite sending mixed signals on the issue in previous months, local Bishop J. M. D'Arcy finally acquiesced, approving the peaceful demonstration by stating,
"I am supportive of all efforts by NDResponse or any other prayerful and dignified demonstrations by Notre Dame students."
