North Dakota's House of Representatives has passed a bill effectively outlawing abortion.
The House voted 51-41 this afternoon to declare that a fertilized egg has all the rights of any person.
That means a fetus could not be legally aborted without the procedure being considered murder.
Minot Republican Dan Ruby has sponsored other bills banning abortion in previous legislative sessions - all of which failed.
He also sponsored today's bill and says it is compatable with Roe versus Wade - the Supreme Court decision which legalized abortion.
(Rep. Dan Ruby, -R- Minot) "This is the exact language that's required by Roe vs. Wade. It stipulated that before a challenge can be made, we have to identify when life begins, and that's what this does." VO CONTINUES But Minot Democrat Kari Conrad says the bill will land North Dakota in court, trying to defend the constitutionality of a law that goes against the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion.
(Rep. Kari Conrad, -D- Minot) "People who presented this bill, were very clear that they intended to challenge Roe versus Wade. So they intend to put the state of North Dakota into court defending Roe vs. Wade"
The bill now goes to the North Dakota Senate. Click Here to Play :55 sec News Clip

"ND House Declares Fertilized Egg Has All the Rights of Any Person"
ReplyDeleteThis is nonsensical on its face. A fertilized egg is an egg that contains an embryo. And HUMANS DO NOT LAY EGGS.
Grrrrr! Biology 101, people!
The bill declared HUMAN EMBRYOS to have rights. Not fertilized eggs, which are something you buy in a supermarket, not gestate in your uterus.
GrannyGrump, let's talk biology 101: Women release eggs. You are right, we don't "lay" them...You are wrong, however, in stating that the fertilized egg contains the embryo. Allow me to explain.
ReplyDeleteThe release of the egg represents the time when a woman can become pregnant. Woman and man unite. The sperm and the egg meet. Thus, becoming..the "fertilized egg" or zygote. At the moment of fertilization, the genetic makeup is complete, including the sex of the infant. Why is this called a Fertilized egg? Because it consists of only one cell. The fertilized egg begins dividing rapidly, growing into many cells, leaving the fallopian tube and entering the uterus three to four days after fertilization. The fertilized egg, now consisting of more cells that are continuing to divide, attaches itself to the uterine wall. This is also known as implantation. AFTER implantation, some cells become the placenta, while others become the EMBRYO.
You see, GrannyGrump, just as a 1 day old infant cannot feed itself, and must grow into a toddler, so too is the process of the growth into an embryo...it must first be a fertilized egg. Thank you for your comment. If you would like to verify the information I just provided, please visit:

Have a blessed day! ~Georgia
P.S. The purpose of the North Dakota "Personhood" Bill does not declare "human embryos to have rights," but rather, "The North Dakota Bill 1572 state House on Tuesday approved a bill that declares unborn children as persons beginning at the point of fertilization" (LifeNews.com) This is so because of what I explained in my previous comment, that at the moment the sperm and the egg meet, the genetic makeup is complete, even the sex of the baby..THIS is when personhood begins. The fertilized egg does not become an embyro until after implantation.
ReplyDelete"This is the exact language that's required by Roe vs. Wade. It stipulated that before a challenge can be made, we have to identify when life begins, and that's what this does," says Republican Rep. Dan Ruby, who has also sponsored other pro-life bills this legislative session, is the main sponsor of the personhood bill.
